Refrigerated ULDs are designed for air travel. They normally are NOT used as middle
mile transportation from OEM to distribution centers or directly to end users, i.e. hospitals,
clinics, etc.
Refrigerated OTR Trailers have a single temperature zone, which can result in product
loss due to cold chain temperature excursions, such as overheating, freezing, or loss of
cooling.
Custody Transfer or “Cross-Docking” to another carrier (OTR or AIRCRAFT) is
sometimes required, resulting in (1) tracking challenges, (2) increased “idle/wait” times
resulting in temperature degradation and/or battery depletion, and (3) profit margin losses.
ULDs have limited time to maintain temperature (i.e. ice/dry ice/N2 cooling or battery
power) when without AC power.
Cross-Docking results in possible loss of temperature and movement monitoring issues
as well as increased human error.
